Retaining Walls & Steps in Cherry Hill, NJ
Block retaining walls for sloped yards and raised beds, and the steps that take you up and down them, built by twin brothers Jakub and Karol Miklus.
What we build
Block walls that hold back a slope or raise a bed, with steps where the yard needs them.

Retaining walls
Segmental block walls that hold back a slope and give you more flat, usable yard.
Raised beds and terraces
Low walls that lift a planting bed or split a hillside into level terraces.
Garden steps
Block or paver steps set into a slope, so you're not walking down wet grass.
Front entry steps
Wide steps and landings from the sidewalk or driveway up to the front door.
What goes into a block wall
A wall is only as good as the base under it and the drainage behind it.

- Base trenchWe dig below grade and lay a compacted, level pad of crushed stone.
- First courseThe first row of block sits partly below ground and is levelled block by block.
- Drainage behindClean stone and a perforated pipe behind the wall let water drain out instead of pushing on it.
- Courses and capsEach course steps back slightly into the slope, and the caps are glued on top.
Before you build a wall
A wall's height decides which permits apply. These come from New Jersey's construction code and local zoning.
4 feet and up
In New Jersey, a retaining wall, or a series of walls on one slope, with a total height of 4 feet or more needs a construction permit.
Close to a foundation
A shorter wall needs a construction permit too if it could harm a building foundation.
Cherry Hill fence limits
Cherry Hill's height limits for fences and walls don't apply to walls that hold back earth.
Haddonfield is stricter
Haddonfield caps retaining walls at 3 feet and counts terraced walls less than 4 feet apart as one wall.

Retaining wall and step questions
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?
In New Jersey, a wall or series of walls with a total height of 4 feet or more needs a construction permit. In Haddonfield, retaining walls are capped at 3 feet.
Can you add steps to a slope we already have?
Yes. We build block and paver steps into slopes and up to front doors.
Can you plant the beds above the wall?
Yes. We plant, mulch and edge the beds on and around new walls.
Water collects at the bottom of our slope. Can you help?
Yes. We also regrade and put in drainage, and we can plan it with the wall.
