Good to know about your lawn

Mowing advice from Rutgers, New Jersey's fertilizer law and a Cherry Hill rule.

  • Mowing height

Rutgers recommends mowing at 2½ to 3½ inches and taking off no more than a third of the blade at a time.

  • Leave the clippings

Clippings left on the lawn recycle nutrients and don't cause thatch, according to Rutgers.

  • Fertilizer dates

New Jersey law bars homeowners from putting nitrogen or phosphorus fertilizer on lawns before March 1 or after November 15.

  • 10-inch limit

Cherry Hill requires grass and weeds on a property to stay under 10 inches.
